Influencing Hands

So my series on hands continues. We influence our children more than we realise. This series on hands is about that influence. The first image was taken by my eldest son when he went off for a beach walk with his brother, sister, and a friend of ours. It was taken at George Town. I can just imagine the conversation before the photo -‘Don’t forget to fan it out.’

This second image was my daughter saying to me – ‘Time for hand series photography time.’ She then had definite ideas of how she was going to hold her flower and then she was off to fish and the moment was gone, like a butterfly.

A Reflection on Hands…

As I look through themes of my photographs I am struck by how many times there are images of hands.  Hands hold the world.

Hands pick things up and feel textures.
Hard and soft, leathery and smooth.
Hands can be both.
They can nurture and destroy.

Hands create things, taking them from the imagination onto a canvas.
They do this by their power to hold, grasp, let go, and hang on.

So for a while I will reflect on the power of hands. Next I will think of the cliches of hands and beyond the cliches of hands. How can one use the images of hands in art, poetry and writing in a way that is new?
